Argentina (AR) New Import Restrictions / License Requirement

Due to a 52% increase / surplus on imports into Argentina in January 2011, the AR government has decided to immediately impose import license requirements on an additional 200 products (from 400 to 600) as an act of protectionism to local industries.
New import requirements are planned to take effect as of March 7th.
Summary of New Import Requirements:1）Consignees must register as an importer with Customs and Industry Bureau for specific commodities, process that could take up to 3 months.
2）Once authorized and registered the consignee may proceed in importing affected products, process which will require formal clearance with the intervention of a licensed broker.
The following are some of the industries / commodities affected:
Automotive
Metal products
Machinery
Retailers
Elevators
Mobile Cellular equipment and phones
